USA - "I've Been There Before" - The Power of Lived Experience in Youth Mental Health What makes a mental health support program truly effective? Sometimes, it's not the credentials on the wall—it's the shared experience in the room. Vaya Health's Youth and Family Partners program in North Carolina is proving that experiential expertise can be transformative. Young people who've navigated foster care, the judicial system, or mental health challenges themselves are now guiding others through similar struggles. 🧠 Key insights from this approach 🔹 Trust Through Understanding - "We're validating their experiences," says youth partner Ivey Broadnax. "I've been there before. Here's what worked for me. Let's work together." 🔹 Presence Over Protocol - These youth partners show up—at court hearings, dance recitals, custody meetings. They're not therapists or parents, but "cheerleaders" and guides who understand the journey. 🔹 Positive Over Deficit - Rather than focusing on symptoms, the program builds positive childhood experiences through leadership opportunities, workforce training, and community connection. The results speak volumes: over 500 people applied for just five youth partner positions. The demand shows how many people recognize the value of turning lived experience into professional expertise. Funded through 2028 across six NC counties, this "system of care" approach reminds us that sometimes the most qualified person to help isn't the one with the most degrees, it's the one who can genuinely say, "I understand." What role does experiential expertise play in your field?
