New Zealand - Early intervention + lived experience = lasting recovery. Powerful move from New Zealand — the government just unveiled its first-ever Action Plan for Addiction, investing millions to strengthen early-life support, tackle Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and expand peer-led recovery initiatives. What stands out most to me: the recognition that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are critical, and that supporting parents facing alcohol or drug challenges can transform not only their recovery but also their children’s futures. The plan doesn’t stop at clinical care. It weaves lived experience into every layer — from new peer follow‑up services for emergency department patients to workforce training in early identification. This is a clear signal that experiential knowledge isn’t a side note in addiction recovery — it’s a cornerstone for change. When people with lived experience stand alongside families, guiding them through services and offering genuine understanding, hope becomes practical help. Great to see a national strategy valuing prevention, early intervention, and the wisdom of lived experience in equal measure.
