The Netherlands - My Worst Fear Became My Greatest Salvation: Judith Blok's Story of Addiction and Recovery Judith Blok, a 46-year-old mother of four, shares her journey of battling addiction to alcohol and drugs, a struggle that ultimately led to her children being placed in foster care. Reflecting on her life, she now considers this painful experience to have been her turning point and salvation. Judith's addiction began at the age of 21 when she first tried cocaine while working at a beach bar in Bloemendaal. The feeling of energy and clarity captivated her, and she quickly fell into a pattern of frequent drug use. Despite having a loving upbringing and supportive parents who lived next door, Judith's life spiraled out of control. Her first child, a son, was born during this time, but her addiction persisted. She sought help at a rehab clinic but relapsed shortly after leaving. Over the years, Judith's relationships were marked by toxicity and substance abuse. Her second partner introduced her to crack cocaine, which worsened her situation. She endured physical abuse and emotional turmoil while trying to care for her children. Despite her struggles, she resisted seeking help out of fear that her children would be taken away. Judith's third relationship was also tumultuous, with her partner's mental health issues adding to the chaos. She turned to alcohol as an alternative to drugs, consuming large amounts daily while attempting to maintain a facade of normalcy for her children. However, her addiction became impossible to hide, and the authorities eventually intervened. The turning point came when her ex-partner recorded and reported her substance abuse to child welfare services. Though devastated when her children were placed in foster care, Judith realized this was the wake-up call she needed. With support from family and friends, she entered an intensive rehabilitation program in England. There, she began the process of recovery and healing. Judith has now been in recovery for six and a half years. Her children have been reunited with her, and she has transformed her life. She completed training to become a peer counselor and now works with the Child Protection Council. Through her own mental health organization, she supports parents facing similar struggles and has written a book titled Mama is Verslaafd (Mom is Addicted) to share her story and inspire others. Judith's journey highlights the power of resilience, the importance of seeking help, and the possibility of rebuilding a life after addiction.
