USA - What happens when someone who has lived the barriers becomes the one dismantling them? Zurisaday Robbins Briz — first-generation Mexican immigrant, advocate, and lived experience professional — didn't just study food insecurity and language access in public services. She navigated it herself. Through her work with APHSA -- American Public Human Services Association's Community Impact Council, she helped reshape how SNAP and nutrition programs actually reach Spanish-speaking and Haitian-Creole families in Maryland. Not through policy documents written in a boardroom. Through authentic community voice, brought to the table by someone who had sat on the other side of it. She then designed and led the Language Justice Lab — improving language access across SNAP and Summer EBT programs. And alongside all of this, she built Gulf Coast Alianza, her own language access consulting practice, because the work didn't stop when the project ended. She's now finishing a Master of Social Work and serving as VP of her school's Phi Alpha Honor Society. This is what it looks like when lived experience isn't tokenized — when it's genuinely centered in the design of public systems. Systems change when the people who understand them from the inside are trusted to lead.
