The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) certification in Louisiana is administered by the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Behavioral Health. Requirements include being 18+, having lived experience with a behavioral health diagnosis (mental health, addiction, or co-occurring disorders), a high school diploma or GED, and at least 12 months of continuous recovery. Training is 2 weeks / 76 hours developed by Recovery Opportunity Center of Arizona, including written midterm and practical final exam. Limited to 20 participants per training. Cost: $500 registration fee. Continuing education: minimum 10 CEUs per calendar year (3 must be in Ethics). Services are Medicaid reimbursable. Statewide peer organization: Louisiana Association of Peer Support. Approximately 374 peer specialists in Louisiana (2024).
